Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur has lashed out at the Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu-led Congress government for discontinuing the popular ‘Jan Manch’ programme that was a flagship initiative under his tenure and was aimed at delivering governance at people’s doorsteps.
Jai Ram alleged that the move was politically motivated, stating, “In a state with challenging geography, the ‘Jan Manch’ was a unique programme that brought the government to the common man’s doorstep, solving issues that otherwise required long travel and costly paperwork.”
He highlighted the impact of Jan Manch, noting that over 50,000 complaints were resolved through 256 sessions of the initiative, saving residents significant time and travel expenses. “The Congress government has sidelined Jan Manch for its political agenda,” he remarked, adding that derogatory labels were attributed to the programme.

He emphasised that the BJP’s initiative facilitated direct access to governance, easing the lives of thousands across Himachal Pradesh.
Jai Ram maintained that Chief Minister Sukhu’s new programme “Chief Minister: An Evening with the Village Family” was an imitation of Jan Manch. Under the new “Chief Minister: An Evening with the Village Family” programme, CM Sukhu spent a night in remote Dodra-Kwar under Rohru subdivision of Shimla district on Saturday.
While launching the rollout of the programme, CM Sukhu had said that its aim was to foster a more organic connection between rural residents and the administration. Under this programme, CM Sukhu and senior officials make unannounced visits to villages, engaging directly with residents to assess the impact and reach of government schemes and development projects.
The programme’s defining feature is its unplanned nature, allowing the Chief Minister to directly gather feedback without the typical fanfare associated with official visits.
Sukhu described it as part of a broader vision for rural empowerment and enhanced governance, saying, “Through ‘An Evening with the Village Family’, we aim to understand the real impact of our schemes and ensure no village is left behind in Himachal’s development journey.”
