Shimla: In an unexpected twist to his routine, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, during his morning walk on Monday (October 7, 2024), paid a surprise visit to Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) and Hospital in Shimla, leaving both the staff and patients curious.

The Chief Minister inspected the soon-to-be-inaugurated Trauma Centre and Emergency Department, closely reviewing the preparedness of the hospital ahead of its formal launch.

Accompanied by Chief Parliamentary Secretary Sanjay Awasthi, CM Sukhu’s early morning inspection caught the hospital administration off guard. He visited every floor of the Emergency Ward, assessing the arrangements of the new facilities, including the Operation Theatre, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and the emergency outpatient department (OPD). During his inspection, the Chief Minister interacted with several patients, asking about their well-being and their experiences with the hospital services.

A senior IGMC doctor shared insights into the visit, explaining, “The Chief Minister conducted a thorough inspection of the Trauma Centre, which is set to be inaugurated on October 8. He gave certain directives on the final preparations. The new facility includes a fully-equipped burns unit, which is a much-needed addition to the hospital, and will prevent patients from being referred to other medical centres like PGI-Chandigarh.”

The upcoming Trauma Centre promises state-of-the-art equipment, including digital X-rays, MRIs, ventilators, oxygen control units and separate major and minor operation theatres. It is designed to handle emergency cases around the clock, providing immediate care for critical patients with a dedicated staff of neurosurgeons, physiotherapists and intensive care specialists. The division of work across multiple shifts is expected to ease the burden on the hospital staff and improve patient care.

The doctor further elaborated that the construction of the Trauma Centre had been pending for nearly a decade, with the National Health Mission approving the budget years ago but facing delays in securing a location. After multiple failed attempts to set up the centre elsewhere in Shimla, IGMC’s new OPD was finally chosen.
