As the festival of Diwali approaches, markets across the country are bustling with enthusiasm. Just before Diwali, the markets in the beautiful city of Dharamshala also come alive. On Diwali, it is a tradition for people to light clay lamps in their homes, reminiscent of when Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya, and the entire city was illuminated with lamps.
In the spirit of “Vocal for Local,” clay lamp vendors in Dharamshala are experiencing a resurgence in demand. Madan Lal, a clay lamp vendor who sets up his shop at Kachheri Chowk in Dharamshala every year, has been in this business for a long time. He shares that in the past few years, the sale of clay lamps had declined, but over the last two to three years, the demand for these lamps has risen significantly. People are particularly fond of the unique designs available. Madan Lal, a resident of Kangra, has been engaged in this work for quite some time. He sets up his shop in Dharamshala just before Diwali. He explains that in the previous years, the sale of clay lamps had decreased, but in the past two to three years, with a decline in the import of Chinese products, clay lamps are selling in higher quantities. People are buying these lamps, and they appreciate the various designs offered. He mentions that clay lamps now come in different designs, and their prices vary accordingly. People have a preference for unique and beautiful designs, showing strong support for locally made products. Madan Lal also points out that to meet the demands of the festive season, work needs to begin in the rainy season to ensure that the clay lamps are ready on time. However, the next generation seems less interested in continuing this tradition, as they do not have a passion for making clay lamps. Supporting local artisans and businesses is at the heart of this Diwali celebration in Dharamshala.
