Contaminated baori water leads to jaundice outbreak in Mandi

The water from famous “Sheetla Baori” in Ward No. 2 of Purani Mandi in Mandi city has been found to be contaminated, leading to several cases of jaundice among children. The Mandi Municipal Corporation in collaboration with the Water Power Department has initiated an investigation and taken immediate action.
After several children fell ill, water samples from three baoris were collected and tested. The results showed that the water from the baori near Sheetla Mata Temple was contaminated. Dr NK Bhardwaj, Mandi CMO, confirmed that the affected children exhibited symptoms of hepatitis-E, likely caused by drinking contaminated water.
Dr Bhardwaj advised residents to boil water before consumption to prevent waterborne diseases, which are more prevalent during the summer and monsoon seasons. He also ordered all Block Medical Officers (BMOs) in the district to ensure the cleanliness of natural water sources to safeguard public health.
Virendra Bhatt Sharma, Mayor of Mandi Municipal Corporation, reported that after the contamination was detected, the Sheetla Baori was thoroughly cleaned. New water samples have been collected and sent for re-testing. Until the new test results are available, residents are advised not to use the baori’s water.
The Jal Shakti Department also tested samples from other baoris in the area, which were found to be safe. The Municipal Corporation, overseeing around 110 baoris and other natural water sources, is working on their renovation and maintenance in partnership with the Irrigation Department.
The Mayor urged the community to contribute to the cleanliness and maintenance of natural water sources and baoris. This collaborative effort is crucial to prevent future outbreaks and ensure safe drinking water for all residents.
