Congress MLAs Seek Cabinet Position as Sukhu Government Approaches Two-Year Milestone

Sukhu Government

Mandi, November 2 — As the Himachal Pradesh government led by Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu approaches its two-year anniversary, anticipation is growing among Congress MLAs for the opportunity to fill a vacant ministerial position in the cabinet. This vacancy has sparked a renewed interest in ministerial roles within the party.

During a recent tour in Kwar, Chief Minister Sukhu addressed inquiries about the open position, indicating that he would seek approval from the Congress high command for any new appointments. This announcement has prompted discussions among party legislators, many of whom view this as a chance for potential elevation in the cabinet.

The Himachal Pradesh cabinet can consist of up to 12 members, including the Chief Minister. Currently, there are nine ministers and one Deputy Chief Minister in place. Initially, three ministerial positions were left unfilled, but two have since been filled by Rajesh Dharmani and Yadvinder Goma. With just one seat remaining, various MLAs are putting forth their candidacies, emphasizing their qualifications based on seniority, caste, and regional representation.

While many MLAs express enthusiasm for the opportunity, some questions remain about whether the Chief Minister will proceed with the cabinet expansion or defer the decision to avoid any potential dissatisfaction among contenders.

The vacant position is likely to be filled by a candidate from the Mandi or Kangra parliamentary constituencies. Currently, Mandi has one minister, Jagat Singh Negi from Kinnaur, although there are strong claims from Kullu and Lahaul-Spiti for representation. Notably, in the Mandi parliamentary area, nine out of ten constituencies are held by the BJP, with Dharampur represented by Congress MLA Chandrashekhar. However, its geographical location in Hamirpur may influence its candidacy.

Among the potential candidates, Kullu MLA Sundar Singh Thakur is seen as a strong contender, currently serving as the Chief Parliamentary Secretary. Additionally, first-time MLA Anuradha Rana is also being considered, especially in light of the desire for enhanced female representation within the cabinet. There are also indications that senior leaders from Kangra may enter the race, further heightening the competition.

As the Sukhu government approaches this significant milestone, the dynamics surrounding the vacant ministerial position reflect the ongoing ambitions within the Congress party, setting the stage for potential changes in the state’s political landscape.
