All India Congress Committee spokesperson and Theog MLA Kuldeep Singh Rathore has urged the Central Government to bestow the prestigious Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour, on Satyanand Stokes, the pioneering figure behind apple horticulture in Himachal Pradesh.
Rathore emphasised that Stokes’ remarkable contributions have not only given the state a distinct identity in apple production but also played a crucial role in bolstering the state’s economy.
Satyanand Stokes, an American who made Himachal Pradesh his home, introduced the cultivation of apples in the early 20th century, transforming the region’s agricultural landscape. His efforts laid the foundation for what is now a thriving industry, making Himachal Pradesh one of the leading apple-producing states in India.

Rathore highlighted the impact of Stokes’ work, noting that the high-quality apples produced in Himachal Pradesh are renowned across the country. The apple industry has become a cornerstone of the state’s economy, with millions of people involved in apple cultivation and its associated businesses. Rathore asserted that recognising Stokes with the Bharat Ratna would be an honour for the millions of horticulturists in the state who continue to thrive thanks to his pioneering efforts.
“The annual economy of the state, exceeding Rs 5,000 crore, is closely linked to apple horticulture. It is imperative that we continue to encourage the development of horticulture in the region,” said Rathore. He urged the state government to formally present this proposal to the central government, asserting that such recognition would be a monumental achievement for the promotion of apple horticulture and a source of immense pride for apple growers across Himachal Pradesh.

Rathore also called for the establishment of a memorial in honor of Satyanand Stokes, stating that his contributions to the state’s apple industry can never be forgotten. He believes that a dedicated memorial would serve as a lasting tribute to the man who introduced and championed apple cultivation in the region.
The demand for Bharat Ratna for Stokes comes in the wake of his birth anniversary, which was recently observed in Narkanda. The occasion saw a large gathering of local horticulturists, who paid their respects to Stokes by offering flowers at his statue. Rathore, who chaired the event, reiterated the significance of Stokes’ legacy and the lasting impact he has had on the state’s horticulture sector.
