CM Sukhu wants usage of new fuel to run trains on Kalka-Shimla heritage track, writes to Railway Minister

Kalka-Shimla

SHIMLA: In a strong push for green energy and social welfare, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has written to Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, requesting the introduction of green hydrogen-powered trains on the iconic Kalka-Shimla heritage railway line. This move aligns with the state’s vision to become a Green Energy State by March 31, 2026.

Highlighting the state’s commitment to sustainable development, the Chief Minister emphasised that green hydrogen is a clean energy source that emits only water vapor, making it an ideal solution to protect Himachal Pradesh’s natural beauty and heritage.

A green hydrogen plant with a capacity of 1 MW is already under construction in Nalagarh and is set to be operational by July next year.

“The operation of the Kalka-Shimla rail services on green hydrogen will not only preserve our environment but also set a precedent for sustainable tourism in the region,” said CM Sukhu.

The Chief Minister made the announcement during a Bhajan Sandhya (devotional evening) titled Bhaj Govindam, organised by the Divya Jyoti Jagriti Sansthan in Shimla on Sunday. The event also marked the launch of the ‘Sankalp’ initiative, a major step in the state’s fight against the growing drug menace among youth.

Speaking at the launch, CM Sukhu stressed the government’s determination to crack down on drug trafficking and provide rehabilitation to those affected by addiction. “The state government has issued strict directives for action against drug traffickers and several arrests have been made in recent months. Through the ‘Sankalp’ initiative, we aim to reconnect individuals battling addiction with their families and help them reintegrate into society,” he stated.

The Chief Minister praised the spiritual programmes, such as Bhaj Govindam, for their role in inspiring individuals toward inner awakening and fulfilling their societal responsibilities. He lauded the work of the Divya Jyoti Jagriti Sansthan, noting their significant contributions to social welfare under the guidance of Divya Guru Ashutosh Maharaj Ji.

Also in attendance at the event were Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee president Pratibha Singh, MLA Harish Janartha and principal adviser (media) to the Chief Minister Naresh Chauhan.
