CM flags off ‘clean Himachal, healthy Himachal’ campaign

Urges people to stop using plastic

Shimla | TNR

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur has appealed to the people of the state to refrain from using plastic National flags on and up to Independence Day and instead use flags made of cloth.

The Chief Minister made this appeal while inaugurating the ‘clean Himachal, healthy Himachal’ campaign here. Thakur earlier flagged off 250 Municipal Corporation workers from the Ridge here to start the campaign.

The Chief Minister said that the state was blessed with natural beauty and a clean environment. It was every individual’s duty to preserve this by keeping the surroundings clean, he added.

Full purchase policy introduced in 2019

The Chief Minister said that the state had banned the use of plastic in 2009 and had introduced the full purchase policy in 2019 to buy plastic from users.

It was also an attempt to rid the environment of non-biodegradable waste. The government has so far purchased 1 lakh kg of plastic from users.

Ban on plastic and thermocol cutlery

The government has also banned the use of plastic and thermocol cutlery, one of the primary causes of environmental pollution.

It has encouraged people to use plates etc. made of paper as well as bowls and plates made out of leaves, for which it has provided around 100 machines to the poor, as a source of generating employment.

Civic bodies provided 70 plastic machines

The Chief Minister said that local bodies and corporations have been given 70 plastic shredding machines, which will enable corporations to recycle the waste scientifically.
