SOLAN: The Chandigarh-Shimla National Highway-5 will remain closed for all types of vehicular movement from 11 am to 1 pm on Tuesday (September 12, 2023) due to maintenance work at Chakki Mod near Jabli on the Parwanoo-Dharampur stretch. In a tweet, the Himachal Pradesh Traffic, Tourist and Railways Police said that the Chakki Mod had been closed for maintenance for two hours. it cited a message received from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which said that necessary maintenance was required at the point where about 100-metre stretch of the road had been washed away on August 2 due to torrential rain.

The Chandigarh-Shimla National Highway-5 had then remained closed for traffic for almost a week due to the major landslide at Chakki Mod near Parwanoo.About 100 metres of the road had turned into debris at Chakki Mod.

There was no sign of the road left at the point as due to continuous landslides, the affected portion that had caved in increased from 25 metres to 100 metres in five days.As commuters and locals faced inconvenience and losses, Congress MLA from Kasauli Vinod Sultanpuri had recently asked those affected by the “unscientific” cutting of hills for the construction of the four-lane highway from Parwanoo to Solan to lodge FIRs against the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

The road near Chakki Mod has been witnessing frequent landslides, posing risk to both commuters and pedestrians.Former deputy mayor of the Shimla Municipal Corporation and a CPM leader, Tikender Panwar, had recently lodged an FIR at Parwanoo against the NHAI and the construction companies concerned for building an allegedly faulty four-lane road that is annually witnessing landslides at several places.
