The Chandigarh Press Club has come out in support of The Newz Radar, a digital news network based out of Himachal Pradesh, following the registration of an FIR in Shimla against the media house over the publication of an analytical article related to the Haryana Assembly election results.
“The Chandigarh Press Club condemns the registration of an FIR against Dharamshala-based journalist Sunil Chadha, Executive Editor of the Newz Radar, after writing a critical article about the Himachal Pradesh government. This is a blatant attack on the freedom of the press,” said Chandigarh Press Club secretary general Umesh Sharma in a statement.

The Chandigarh Press Club has also urged the Himachal Pradesh government to ensure the safety of Sunil Chadha, who has been into journalism for the past two decades.
Chandigarh Press Club’s two-term former president Saurabh Duggal too criticised the registration of the FIR. “As part of the media fraternity, I condemn the registration of an FIR against Dharamshala-based journalist Sunil Chadha, Executive Editor of The Newz Radar, over a critical article about the Himachal government.
Senior journalist Sunil Chadha authored an analytical piece on how the performance of the Congress-led Himachal government may have impacted the Congress’ performance in Haryana elections. An FIR was registered against him in Shimla. This is an attack on freedom of the press,” Saurabh Duggal posted on X.

Saurabh Duggal is the author of famous book ‘Akhada’, which is the only authorised biography of Mahavir Singh Phogat, the father of famous Haryana women wrestlers Geeta Phogat and Babita Phogat, on whose life’s struggles Aamir Khan-star Bollywood blockbuster ‘Dangal’ is based.
The article, published on The Newz Radar website on October 8 (2024), the day the Haryana election results were declared and the BJP defeated a confident Congress, critically analysed whether or not the Congress government’s actions in Himachal Pradesh influenced the poll outcome in neighbouring Haryana.
Within hours after the story was published, an FIR was lodged in Shimla by a 50-year-old Congress supporter, who alleged that the article intended to tarnish the image of Congress leaders.
