CHAMBA: The heavy spell of snow has thrown normal life out of gear in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, disrupting transport services and leading to power outages. The direct road links between the district headquarters and nearly all sub-divisional headquarters have been blocked.
As many as 115 roads across the district have been blocked due to snow. Hundreds of villages have been plunged into darkness as power transformers have suffered snags. Pangi valley finds itself entirely isolated from road access to the outside world, while electricity remains operational only in Kilar, the valley headquarters. All other villages remain engulfed in darkness.
The traffic has come to a halt on the Dalhousie-Banikhet, Chamba-Khajjiar, Dalhousie-Khajjiar, Chamba-Chuwadi Jot, Chamba-Bharmaur, Chamba-Tisa-Satyas road and Chamba-Saluni-Langera roads.
In Public Works Department’s Pangi division, all 42 roads are blocked due to snowfall. Twelve roads in Bharmour division, 20 of Saloni, 22 of Teesa, 12 of Chamba, one of Chuwadi and six roads of Dalhousie division are also closed.
Superintending Engineer of PWD Circle, Dalhousie, Diwakar Pathania said that due to heavy snowfall on Wednesday night, the above mentioned roads of the district had been blocked. “Machines have been deployed at various places to open these roads,” he said.
Rajeev Thakur, Superintending Engineer, Electricity Circle, Dalhousie, said that 50 power transformers had been shut in Pangi, 42 in Teesa, 60 in Saloni, five in Chamba and 25 in Bharmour. He said that the electricity board was trying to restore the electricity system in the affected areas.
