The CBI raided the branch of a bank in Tahliwal, Una, in connection with the Rs 250 crore scholarship scam in Himachal Pradesh. Details of bank accounts of students were collected from the branch by the CBI team. The scholarship scam is now being connected to a private institution in Una.
The scam was carried out in the state with the connivance of officials of the education department. Between 2012-13 and 2017, 80 per cent of the scholarship amount was released to 250 private educational institutions and just 20 per cent of the scholarship was given to 2.5 thousand other institutions. Most of the money was usurped by private educational institutions and officers of the education department.
There are also several institutions that embezzled more than Rs 38 crores in the name of this scholarship. Several officers have been arrested in this case so far, however, the CBI has now undertaken to expose more institutions and officials involved.
