The Central Election Commission (CEC) has announced by-elections in Himachal and other states of the country. A notification regarding this has been issued on Tuesday. As per the schedule released by the CEC, polling will be conducted on October 30, bringing into force the Model Code of Conduct.
Nomination papers can be filed on October 8 for by-elections to the lone parliamentary seat and 3 assembly constituencies of Himachal. Lay-offs will begin on October 11. Interested contenders will be able to withdraw their nominations till  3 pm on October 16.

Election symbols will be alloted to contesting candidates on the same day. Apart from Mandi parliamentary constituency, by-elections will also be held in Jubbal Kotkhai, Arki and Fatehpur assembly constituencies.

Political activity

With the announcement of the by-election, the political momentum in the state has heated up with both parties, the Congress as well as the BJP, planning strategies to win the elections. Chief Minister Jairam Thakur has also had to cancel his visit to Rekong Peo, after the model code of conduct was imposed.

With the introduction of the model code of conduct, all inaugurations, foundation laying, transfers of all officers and employees have been banned. Likewise, no political party will be able to give any inducements to woo voters.
