MANDI: A huge boulder fell onto a passing car on the Manali-Jalandhar National Highway near Kotli in Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi, injuring three persons, including two women. The injured were rushed to Kotli hospital and later referred to the Regional Hospital in Mandi for further treatment. Both women are said to be seriously injured.
The car’s occupants, Diwan Chand (54), Meena Devi (55) and Jayodhya Devi (59), were on their way home to Satahan from Kotli when the incident occurred. After receiving initial treatment, the injured were shifted to the Regional Hospital in Mandi by ab ambulance. Meena Devi and Jayodhya Devi are reported to be in critical condition.
The car’s roof was badly damaged by the falling rock, requiring special equipment for removal. Additional Superintendent of Police Sagar Chander confirmed the incident saying inquest proceedings were on.
Currently, the construction work on the National Highway-70 four-lane project is underway on the Mandi-Kotli-Dharampur road. The road widening has put the lives of commuters at risk at several locations on the route. The unscientific cutting of hills is one of the reasons for such grave incidents where boulders stay loose at the cutting sites and roll down all of a sudden, proving dangerous for commuters.
