A harrowing incident unfolded on Saturday at the Palampur bus stand complex in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh where a college girl was alleged attacked by her spurned lover with a sickle. The girl is currently undergoing treatment at the Trauma Center of the PGI, Chandigarh, where her condition was stated to be stable and she is able to communicate despite sustaining serious injuries.
Bollywood actress and BJP candidate from Mandi parliamentary constituency Kangana Ranaut personally reached out to the student over the phone to inquire about her well-being. Expressing her concern, Kangana pledged to cover all expenses related to the girl’s treatment.
Admn officials too in touch
In a parallel effort, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu addressed the media in Dharamshala and announced the Himachal government’s commitment to bear the entire cost of the girl’s medical care. Additionally, administrative officials from Palampur have been in touch with the victim’s family, ensuring seamless coordination to facilitate her treatment.
According to reports, the accused, Sumit Kumar, attacked the girl with a sickle about 12 times, inflicting deep wounds on her head and hand. As news of the incident spread, it drew attention from various quarters, including prominent figures offering support and assistance.
Surgery planned in PGI today
The initial treatment at Tanda Medical College in Kangra involved stitching her head wounds, but due to the severity of her injuries and excessive bleeding, she was referred to the PGI, Chandigarh. At the PGI, doctors administered emergency care, including approximately 25 to 30 stitches on her injured hand.
A surgery is learnt to have been scheduled for Monday to address fractures and nerve damage in one of her fingers. Despite her ordeal, the girl’s concern extends to her academic responsibilities, expressing worry about missing a class test scheduled for Monday. Currently pursuing MA at a private college in Palampur, she conveyed her inability to attend the test due to her condition.
Visitors, including members of the Himachal community residing in Chandigarh, have been pouring in to offer support and comfort to the victim during her stay at the Trauma Centre. Her family, including parents, uncle and cousin, have also arrived at the PGI to stand by her side during this challenging time.
Attacker was harassing girl for 2 weeks
In light of recent developments, details have emerged regarding the victim’s relationship with the accused. Sources said that the attacker, Sumit Kumar, had been harassing the girl for nearly two weeks, prompting her to keep the matter private out of fear of stigma. Despite the trauma she has endured, the victim’s resilience remains evident, with observers commending her unwavering courage throughout this ordeal.
