MANDI: The body of a tourist from Jalandhar in Punjab who was missing after falling into the Beas following a scuffle with the driver of a tempo traveller over overtaking in Mandi has been recovered after a two-day search.
The deceased has been identified as Amandeep Singh (35), a resident of Raipur Gujra village in Jalandhar’s Nakodar area. Amandeep as well as tempo driver Gangaram, a resident of Karsog in Mandi district, had slipped into the Beas while fighting on road on January 1 night around 9 pm.
Amandeep was headed to Jalandhar in his Fortuner with his wife and son after celebrating New Year in Manali when a fight ensued between him and Gangaram. The scuffle between the two escalated to the point where both of them slipped into a gorge, eventually falling into the Beas in darkness. Passersby who gathered on the spot immediately alerted the police and the local administration as they saw both drivers falling into the Beas. Police, SDRF and local administration teams promptly arrived at the scene, initiating a search for both.
According to information obtained by TNR, the Fortuner and the tempo traveller were traveling from Manali to Punjab on the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway when the clash between the duo took place near Bindrabani, about 3 km away from Mandi town.
A police official said the search for the duo had been going on since Sunday evening, but Amandeep’s body was found on Wednesday. An SDRF team had found a blood-soaked shoe and a mobile phone lying near the Beas.
