Dharamshala: A letter uploaded by BJP worker Shubham Sood has sparked a political controversy in Dharamshala, after it revealed municipal ward member Devender Jaggi claiming credit for the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojna (PMAY) housing scheme for himself and Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu. The letter notably omits any mention of Prime Minister Narendra Modi or the central government’s role in funding the project.

The letter, dated October 17, 2024, was addressed to Sumna Devi, wife of Chuni Lal, a resident of Dhagwar village in Dharamshala constituency. In it, Jaggi allegedly took credit for the housing scheme along with CM Sukhu, leaving out the central government’s significant contribution, despite the scheme being a flagship initiative of the Prime Minister.

Sood, a vocal BJP supporter, posted the letter on social media, questioning Jaggi’s attempt to claim credit for a centrally funded scheme. He criticized the ward member, stating, “If you’re taking credit for building these houses, then also deposit the Rs 30 crore for the Central University in Dharamshala! Ensure jobs for educated unemployed youth at the IT Park in Chetru!

There are 573 landless families whose cases have been pending at the Tehsil office for years—provide them with land! If you can’t accomplish these tasks, don’t deceive the public with misleading letters.” Sood concluded with a direct reminder, “This money has been sent by our honorable Prime Minister, not the state government. The public is not foolish.”

Sood’s sharp response resonated widely on social media, drawing attention to the practice of local politicians attempting to downplay the contributions of the central government for political gain.

Chief Minister Sukhwinder Singh Sukhu in a recent reaction to central funds to stata had said that Himachal Pradesh is an integral part of the federal structure, where each state has both rights and responsibilities. “Union government collect its taxes from states. Therefore, states have a legitimate claim on this tax revenue” he had said this month.

Social media users were quick to comment on the broader trend, with many noting that once political leaders come into power, they often revise the narrative to sideline those who helped make such schemes a reality. “It’s become typical for politicians to rewrite the story after their election wins, forgetting the role of others,” one user remarked.

The incident has added fuel to the ongoing political rivalry between Himachal Pradesh’s ruling Congress government and the BJP, especially over central welfare programs like PMAY.
