The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is all set to nominate its national president JP Nadda to the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat. The party on Wednesday (February 14, 2024) released a list of seven leaders whom it would be nominating to the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat and Maharashtra. The elections to the Rajya Sabha seats are scheduled on February 27.
Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Ashok Chavan, who resigned from the Congress on Tuesday to join the BJP, is set to be nominated to the upper house from his home state.
In addition to Nadda and Chavan, Govindbhai Dholakia, Mayankbhai Nayak and Dr Jashvantsinh Salamsinh Parmar have been nominated as BJP candidates from Gujarat. From Maharashtra, the BJP has fielded Ashok Chavan, Medha Kulkarni and Dr Ajit Gopchhade.
Nadda, currently a Rajya Sabha member representing Himachal Pradesh, faces electoral challenges in the Congress-ruled state, prompting the party to explore alternative route to secure his continued presence in the upper house. His tenure ends in April.
There was earlier buzz on Nadda even considering contesting the Lok Sabha elections from either Mandi or Kangra constituencies, but that has been proved false. His recent visit to Kangra too was seen as a connection to his parliamentary contest. Nadda belongs to Himachal Pradesh’s Bilaspur district, which is part of Hamirpur Lok Sabha constituency, represented in Parliament by Union Minister Anurag Thakur.
With the Rajya Sabha elections looming on February 27, the deadline for nomination submissions is set for February 15, prompting a flurry of political activities across party lines.
