BJP MP from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh and actor Kangana Ranaut has approached the police for protection after a video emerged on social media showing a group of men threatening her regarding the release of her upcoming film ‘Emergency’.

The threats surfaced following the release of the film’s trailer, in which Ranaut portrays former Prime Minister late Indira Gandhi.

In the video, six men are seen sitting in a room, with two of them dressed as Nihang Sikhs. One of the men warns that the Sikh community will strongly condemn the movie if it is released. “Your movie will be received with chappals,” he threatens.

Another man in the video, identified as Vicky Thomas Singh, who claims to be a social media influencer on X and frequently shares content praising Khalistani terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, issues a more direct threat. “If Bhindranwale is portrayed as a terrorist, remember what happened to Indira Gandhi, the person you’re making a movie about,” he says ominously.

He also references Indira Gandhi’s bodyguards Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, who assassinated her in 1984, saying, “We will offer our heads, but those who can offer heads can also chop them off.”

Ranaut responded to the threats by sharing the video on social media and tagging the Director Generals of Police of Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab, urging them to take action. “Please look into this,” she wrote on X.

The film ‘Emergency’ has already sparked controversy, with several organisations, including the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, demanding a ban on its release. They allege that the film promotes an “anti-Sikh” narrative and misrepresents Sikhs as “separatists”.

The trailer of Emergency depicts Indira Gandhi’s early years, highlighting her bond with her father, the late Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, and her entry into politics. It also explores how she navigated various conflicts, political crises and challenges throughout her career. The film’s release is likely to further inflame tensions as the debate over its portrayal of historical events continues to intensify.
