DHARAMSHALA: The Himachal Pradesh Vidhan Sabha at Tapovan in Dharamshala witnessed another day of fervent protest by opposition as BJP MLAs continued their unique demonstration on the third day of the winter session on Thursday (December 21, 2023).

Wearing turbans reminiscent of farmers and carrying small tumblers filled with milk, BJP MLAs gathered at Tapovan to demand the purchase of milk at Rs 100 per litre from cow herders, something promised by the Congress government in its 10 guarantees before it came to power.

The protest stems from the unfulfilled election promise made by the Congress to purchase milk from farmers at the rate of Rs 100 per litre. “Despite the assurance given before the Assembly elections, the guarantee remains unfulfilled, prompting us to raise the cause of the farmers in a symbolic manner,” emphasised leader of opposition and former CM Jai Ram Thakur. He said the opposition would ensure the government was held accountable for its unkept promises.

“We are reminding the government of its guarantees one by one. The farmers are eagerly awaiting the purchase of milk and the government must fulfill its commitment,” stated Jai Ram during the demonstration.

This marks the third consecutive day of BJP’s unconventional protests in the Assembly premises. Previously, on the first day, BJP MLAs showcased their dissent by wearing apron-type placards mentioning the 10 guarantees of the Congress. On the second day, they strategically placed baskets filled with cow dung to draw attention to the government’s unmet assurances.

The Assembly floor is likely to witness intense deliberations as the opposition continues to press for accountability, emphasising the need for the government to honour its commitments made to the electorate.
