SHIMLA: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said here on Friday (February 9, 2024) that forest clearance for the expansion of the Bhuntar airport in Kullu had been received and the project would be executed anytime soon.
The Chief Minister said widening of the airport would enable bigger aircraft to land, thus increasing the footfall of tourists through cheaper air travel and facilitating the locals as well. Besides, the airport would now meet the required regulatory standards of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and enhance extra safety measures.
This airport plays a key role in boosting tourism activities in Kullu and Lahaul as it draws a significant number of tourists to explore the nature’s splendour, the richness of culture and traditions, besides the religious sites. The Chief Minister said that direct flights linking Amritsar to Kullu had also become operational and the expansion will further add to the increased influx of both domestic and international travellers.
Sukhu said that along with the horticulture and hydropower sectors, tourism was the mainstay of the state’s economy and thousands of families were associated with this sector. He said the government was committed to widely promote tourism and had allocated a substantial amount Rs 3,000 crore to the tourism sector.
“Our government is making every possible effort to promote tourism and enhance infrastructure for facilitating the tourists to offer them a memorable experience in Himachal Pradesh. We have set a target to attract over five crore tourists every year in the state and efforts are being made in this direction since the formation of the new government in the state,” said the Chief Minister.
