Kangra: Kangra Deputy Commissioner Hem Raj Bairwa is spearheading an initiative to repurpose all abandoned government buildings. Reliable sources suggest that the issue of these neglected structures may be addressed during the upcoming monsoon session of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly too.
In line with this initiative, the temple town of Kangra is set to breathe new life into a long-abandoned government building on Kangra Fort Road. After nearly two decades of neglect, the municipal council has approved plans to convert the structure into a banquet hall, restaurant and parking facility. The project’s blueprint has already been prepared by officials.
According to council records, the building, initially intended for parking, was constructed in 2005 at a cost of approximately Rs 35 lakh. However, it has remained unused, resulting in a significant waste of public funds.
Chaman Lal Kapoor, the Executive Officer, told TNR that several projects are being launched to benefit the public and boost economic activities in the town, with this project being one of them. He also mentioned plans for a new parking facility near the council office, capable of accommodating 100 cars, alongside the refurbishment of existing shops and the creation of a new commercial complex.
Kapoor emphasised that the council is committed to identifying and repurposing abandoned government buildings to generate employment and enhance financial stability. “We aim to undertake these projects on a build-operate-transfer basis to ensure their viability,” he added.
3,250 households paying tax
“We have around 3,250 households that contribute to the council through house tax. The upcoming projects will not only strengthen our financial position but also ensure ongoing developmental activities in the town,” Kapoor stated.
