An avalanche near the North Portal of the Atal Tunnel in the tribal district of Lahaul-Spiti in Himachal Pradesh has resulted in a significant amount of snow falling into Chandra river.
This has halted the river’s flow, leading to the formation of a lake-like structure near the tunnel’s entrance. In response, local authorities have issued an alert, urging people to stay away from the riverbanks. Police personnel are using loudspeakers to advise both tourists and locals against approaching the river.
The avalanche occurred around 11 am, originating from a nearby hill and directly impacting the Chandra. The formation of the lake has caused anxiety among the locals, prompting the police to warn villages along the riverbanks to prevent any potential loss of life or property.
Lahaul-Spiti SP Mayank Chaudhary said the police were alerting these villages through loudspeaker, emphasising the importance of caution.
