Australia to stop detaining asylum seekers in Papua New Guinea

Australia will stop detaining asylum seekers in Papua New Guinea (PNG) at the end of December, the two countries announced.

This comes as Australia shuts one of two controversial detention centres it set up in PNG that have been criticised by the UN.

Since 2013, Australia has sent asylum seekers attempting to reach the country by boat to PNG or Nauru.
