Shimla: For the Gandhi family of the Congress, it’s turning out to be a complete reunion in Shimla as after Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi too is scheduled to join his sister and mother in the Himachal Pradesh capital on Saturday (September 21, 2024).
Priyanka, who frequently visits her residence in Chharabra, near Shimla, arrived earlier in the week, followed by Sonia Gandhi, who made her way from Chandigarh on September 17. The two have been spending quiet time together at the scenic retreat, located 12 km from Shimla, amidst tight security arrangements.
Was expected to visit on Friday
Rahul was expected to arrive on Friday, but his plans were delayed due to personal reasons. He had reached Karnal but did not continue the journey to Shimla as initially scheduled. Sources now confirm that Rahul is likely to head to Shimla on Saturday, where he will join his mother and sister for a few days of relaxation away from the political spotlight.

This gathering of the Gandhi family in Shimla comes amid a backdrop of political developments. While they are in the hills for some downtime, there is also speculation that the visit could serve as a moment of strategising ahead of upcoming election campaigns in Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir. It is believed that Sonia and Priyanka may embark on campaign trails directly from Shimla.
Mosque, money turmoil in Himachal
The visit comes at a time when Himachal has been facing widespread protests that were triggered by the alleged illegal expansion at a mosque in Sanjauli, a Shimla suburb. The protest turned more intense after the police lathicharged protesters in Sanjauli. The mosque controversy erupted amid the financial turmoil that Himachal has been facing, which led to an unprecedented delay in the disbursement of salaries and pensions of government employees.
Priyanka targets BJP from Shimla
Priyanka Gandhi has taken the opportunity to target the BJP from Shimla. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), she criticised the tone of a response from BJP president JP Nadda to a letter written by Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The letter had raised concerns about the safety of Rahul Gandhi following what the Congress describes as “unrestrained and violent statements” by some BJP leaders. Priyanka’s post underscored her disapproval of the manner in which the BJP responded, particularly given Kharge’s seniority and the tradition of respectful political discourse.
