Union minister, wife own a pistol each, both don’t have car
DHARAMSHALA: Union Information and Broadcasting and Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur is fond of investing in the share market and his wealth has seen a remarkable surge over the past 15 years. Owning movable and immovable assets worth around Rs 10 crore in 2024, his wealth grew by 400 per cent from Rs 2 crore in 2009.
However, Anurag is probably not the richest politician in Himachal as his party colleague and Chopal (Shimla) MLA Balbir Verma, a builder, had declared assets worth Rs 125 crore during the Assembly elections in 2022. Congress candidate from Mandi Vikramaditya Singh has assets worth around Rs 100 crore. Congress MLA from Nagrota (Kangra) RS Bali, son of former minister late GS Bali, showed assets worth Rs 92.3 crore in 2022.
Land in Dharamshala, Kullu
Anurag, who is contesting the Lok Sabha elections for the fifth time from the Hamirpur Lok Sabha seat of Himachal Pradesh, has disclosed his financial details as part of the election process while filing his nomination papers on Monday (May 13, 2024). He has a diverse financial portfolio and has invested approximately Rs 47 lakh in the share market.
The minister has seven bank accounts and investments in various properties across Punjab and Himachal Pradesh. He owns land in Punjab’s Kapurthala and Jalandhar and in Himachal’s Dharamshala, Kullu and Sameerpur, his native place. He also owns a residential building in Jalandhar.
Jewellery worth ₹56 lakh
In addition to his property holdings, Anurag and his wife Shefali possess jewellery valued at around Rs 56 lakh, a significant increase from Rs 7.75 lakh in 2009. He owns jewellery weighing 103 grams worth approximately Rs 7.21 lakh, while Shefali’s jewellery, weighing 690 grams, is valued at Rs 48.30 lakh. The couple also owns a stone worth Rs 1 lakh.
The couple possesses two firearms, with Anurag owning a pistol worth Rs 3.25 lakh and Shefali holding one valued at Rs 2.50 lakh. Shefali’s pistol is of Belgian make. The duo doesn’t own any car. Anurag currently has three cases pending in the Supreme Court, although he has not been convicted in any criminal case.
