As Narendra Modi gears up for his third term as Prime Minister, all eyes are on the formation of his new cabinet, particularly in Himachal Pradesh where the BJP has secured all four Lok Sabha seats for the third consecutive time.

Speculations are rife within political circles that JP Nadda, currently serving as the national president of the BJP, might relinquish his position to assume a ministerial role in the Modi government 3.0. But if Nadda is adjusted, will two-term minister Anurag Thakur have to make the sacrifice? Analysts indicate towards this as it’s highly unlikely that small state like Himachal may be given two ministries, particularly when Prime Minister Narendra Modi has to accommodate ambitious allies in his third term.

But dropping Anurag Thakur isn’t going to go down well in BJP circles as the firebrand youth leader has won for the fifth consecutive term in the recent Lok Sabha elections. Anurag served as the Union Information Broadcasting and Sports Minister in the outgoing union cabinet.

BJP Mandi MP and Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut too was said to be in the race due to her wide appeal and for having defeated powerful Himachal minister Vikramaditya Singh.

Other names surfacing for ministerial roles include Suresh Kashyap, a three-time victor from the Shimla seat. Kashyap and Ranaut are speculated to be in contention for ministerial positions from the Scheduled Caste and women’s quota, respectively. However, their aspirations face challenges from within their own ranks, with Sikander Kumar vying for the Scheduled Caste quota and Indu Goswami contesting for the women’s quota. Both Sikander and Indu are Rajya Sabha members.

Himachal Pradesh, often yielding only a single ministerial representation in the central government, could even see a potential increase in its ministerial share. More so due to Modi’s affectionate regard for Himachal Pradesh, akin to his sentiment for Gujarat.
