The Himachal Pradesh government has denotified 90 schools in the state over low admission rate and 23 of these are in Mandi district’s Seraj, the Assembly constituency of BJP leader and former Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur.
In a recent development, Education Secretary Abhishek Jain issued orders denotifying the 90 schools in the state. This decision comes in light of low admissions in these schools, including high and senior secondary ones.
The state government took into account enrollment data of children until March 31 and granted extra time for these schools to increase their admissions. The decision to denotify the schools was prompted by the recommendations of teachers’ organisations, who urged the government to assess the current enrollment figures before considering school closures.
The denotification was based on specific criteria set by the state government. Schools with fewer than 15 students in middle school, 20 students in high school and 25 students in senior secondary school were included in the closure list. The number of students in these schools was found to be below the stipulated figures.
Prior to this, the state government had closed 285 primary schools, stating that the previous government had opened them solely for political purposes without considering the quality of education. The decision to denotify the schools with low admissions aims to address the issue of underutilised resources and improve the overall educational system in the state.
