SHIMLA: In response to mounting protests by student outfits and unemployed youth, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has halted the period-based guest teacher recruitment policy until further notice. The Chief Minister made the announcement during a press interaction at the Secretariat in Shimla on Saturday (January 20, 2024).
Chief Minister Sukhu said that the controversial policy would be reconsidered and implemented only after a thorough discussion on the matter, particularly when Education Minister Rohit Thakur returned to Shimla. He emphasised that the decision to pause the policy was aimed to ensure a comprehensive evaluation and a more inclusive discussion on its potential implications.
Highlighting the key details of the policy, Sukhu clarified that guest teachers would be compensated on an hourly basis, adhering strictly to the period-based payment system. He emphasised that this is a temporary arrangement and not indicative of a permanent recruitment process based on monthly or annual contracts.
Addressing concerns related to the JOA-IT post code 817 recruitment, the Chief Minister assured that the government was meticulously evaluating the legal aspects of the matter before declaring the results. He clarified that he had not encouraged any candidates to meet ministers regarding the recruitment process.
“The decision to suspend the guest teacher recruitment policy reflects the government’s responsiveness to public concerns and a commitment to ensure that educational policies are thoroughly scrutinised before implementation. The Chief Minister’s call for a detailed discussion signals a willingness to engage with stakeholders and consider their perspectives in shaping future policies related to education in Himachal Pradesh,” said a Congress leader.
