In a remarkable gesture amid Himachal Pradesh’s ongoing financial crisis, Tehsildar Hira Lal Ghejta has set an inspiring example by accepting reappointment at a symbolic salary of just Re 1.
Ghejta, who retired on August 31, was reappointed by the state government for six months but declined his full salary, opting instead to take only a token amount as a show of solidarity with the state’s financial woes.
Known for his integrity and service during his 36-year career in the Revenue Department, Ghejta has served as both Tehsildar and Naib Tehsildar, earning a reputation as a dedicated and honest officer.

In a letter to Shimla’s Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap, Ghejta expressed his decision to forgo his salary, citing the state’s economic difficulties, where employees have faced delays in receiving their wages and pensioners are still awaiting payments.
“This selfless act comes at a time when many retired officers often seek re-employment with full benefits and perks. Ghejta’s decision contrasts sharply with such practices, showcasing his commitment to public service. His gesture has been widely appreciated, especially as the state’s financial situation remains dire, with salaries being delayed for government employees and pensioners,” said an employee leader.
Ghejta, who hails from Jubbal subdivision in Shimla, a region known for apple horticulture, has also held leadership positions in the revenue officer-employee federation, advocating for the rights and welfare of revenue officers and employees.
