Amid the heat of byelections to three Assembly constituencies in Himachal Pradesh when Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s wife Kamlesh Thakur is the Congress nominee for Dehra seat, Income Tax Department officials have swooped down on CM Sukhu’s home constituency Nadaun and has been raiding three businessmen for the past two days.
The raids target the homes and business premises of three prominent businessmen in the region, leading to a significant stir in the political landscape. The ongoing raids have surpassed the 30-hour mark, with officials meticulously examining various properties and seizing documents, land records and contracts. Jewellers are learnt to have been called to assess the value of confiscated jewellery.
In a dramatic turn of events on Thursday (July 4, 2024), Income Tax officials employed a JCB to traverse a ravine adjacent to the Beas river in Dhanot. Their destination was a businessman’s crusher located in an area near the Nadaun boundary. Despite the rising water levels in the Beas, the officials reached the site and conducted a comprehensive investigation of the properties associated with the crusher. Concurrently, raids were conducted on the houses and business establishments linked to the three businessmen.
The raid coincides with the byelections to three Assembly constituencies — Dehra (Kangra district), Hamirpur and Nalagarh (Solan). Incidentally, Nadaun is in Hamirpur district and Congress turncoat and BJP MLA Sudhir Sharma had accused CM Sukhu of owning a ‘benami’ crusher in the district. The timing of the raids has sparked various speculations and intensified the political atmosphere in the region.
