After Telangana, will Congress-ruled Himachal consider banning Kangana Ranaut’s film ‘Emergency’?

telangana

With the Telangana government considering a ban on the release of BJP MP Kangana Ranaut-starrer film ‘Emergency’, speculation is mounting whether a similar step might be taken in Congress-ruled Himachal Pradesh.

Kangana Ranaut is a first-time MP from Mandi in Himachal Pradesh. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu is yet to issue any statement on not allowing the screening of the film, which is based on the life of former Prime Minister and late Congress leader Indira Gandhi and the declaration of Emergency in 1975.

The Chief Minister of Congress-ruled Telangana, Revanth Reddy, assured a delegation of Sikh community leaders of considering a ban on the release of Kangana Ranaut’s film ‘Emergency’ pending legal consultation. The delegation of Telangana Sikh Society, led by former IPS officer Tejdeep Kaur Menon, met an official of Revanth Reddy’s office at the Secretariat in Hyderabad and requested for a ban on the screening of ‘Emergency’.

The 18-member delegation submitted a representation, expressing deep concerns over the film’s portrayal of the Sikh community.

According to a statement released on Thursday, the delegation alleged that the film depicted Sikhs as terrorists and anti-nationals, a portrayal they found “offensive” and damaging to the community’s image. Reddy later stated that a decision would be made after obtaining legal advice.

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee has also sent a legal notice to the makers of ‘Emergency’ for allegedly “misrepresenting” Sikhs. The notice claims that radical Sikh preacher Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, along with the Sikh community, never demanded Khalistan and insists that the scenes depicting anti-Sikh sentiments should be removed from the movie.

The trailer of the film was released on August 14 and it is scheduled to hit theatres on September 6.
