SHIMLA: The Himachal Pradesh capital Shimla is facing a severe water crisis due to incessant heavy rains over the past three days. The downpour has caused excessive siltation in the drinking water projects, leading to a halt in pumping operations.
The pump house of the Chaba drinking water project has been submerged, bringing the supply to a standstill. Only 6 million litres per day (MLD) of water reached Shimla on Tuesday, whereas the city requires approximately 40 MLD of water daily.
Monday witnessed a complete absence of water supply from any drinking water project in Shimla, plunging the city into a massive water crisis, leaving residents without access to drinking water in their homes. The situation has prompted a public outcry, compelling the Jal Nigam to distribute water through tankers.
Shimla Municipal Corporation Mayor Surendra Chauhan supervised the distribution of water to affected residents on Tuesday morning. He was seen carrying buckets of water to people’s homes and assisting an elderly woman in filling her containers.
The Mayor said Shimla had experienced heavy rainfall over the past few days, resulting in substantial siltation in the drinking water projects. The interruption in pumping operations had severely impacted the water supply to the city, he said. However, he assured the public that the situation would improve once the weather conditions improved.
