DHARAMSHALA: Following the recent controversy involving Himachal Pradesh Director General of Police Sanjay Kundu and Palampur-based businessman Nishant Sharma, Kangra district is once again in the limelight for an alleged abuse of power, this time involving Congress MLA from Indora Malender Rajan.
Educationist Vivek Singh, who operates Arni University in Kangra, claims to have been threatened allegedly on the MLA’s behalf, leading to an attack near Kandrori on the New Year’s night.
Vivek Singh, who is currently in Shimla, expressed frustration over the police allegedly registering a case against protesting students instead of arresting the attackers. “The culprits are still roaming freely in the area,” he said, adding that he was “seeking justice through various channels”.
In a phone conversation with TNR, Vivek Singh accused the local Sub-Divisional Magistrate of pressuring him to employ someone at the MLA’s behest. Attempts were made to reach out to MLA Malender Rajan and the SDM for their reaction to the allegations, but both remained unresponsive. All the MLA said was “he is in a flight and heading to Hyderabad”.
An educationist said the incident raised a question mark over the alleged misuse of power by public officials in the region, casting shadows on the credibility of the system. Vivek Singh had written mails to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and the Kangra Deputy Commissioner.
