Haryana to vote in single phase on October 1; results on October 4
The long-awaited Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections are set to take place on September 18, September 25 and October 1, with the results scheduled to be announced on October 4, the Election Commission of India said on Friday (August 16, 2024).
This marks a significant milestone in restoring democracy to the region, following a Supreme Court directive to hold elections by September 30. The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly has been in abeyance since 2014, with the region under Governor’s Rule since 2018.
The announcement of these election dates is a critical step in the process of reviving democratic governance in the former state, which was bifurcated into two union territories — Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh — in August 2019.

Chief Election Commission Rajiv Kumar emphasised the eagerness of the people of Jammu and Kashmir to participate in the electoral process. “The people want change… they want to script a new future,” he stated, highlighting the enthusiasm observed during recent visits to the region. He recalled the “long queues” at polling stations during the Lok Sabha elections, indicating a strong desire among the people to engage in the democratic process.
In preparation for the elections, the final voter list will be published by August 20, shortly after the conclusion of the Amarnath Yatra. Approximately 87 lakh voters are expected to cast their ballots in the upcoming elections.
The announcement follows a recent visit by the Election Commission team to Jammu and Kashmir, where they assessed the election preparedness and engaged with political representatives and senior security officials. This visit, the third by the EC since 2019, underscores the importance of ensuring a safe and fair election in a region that has experienced significant political and security challenges.
Meanwhile, Haryana is set to vote in a single phase on October 1 to elect a new state government, the Election Commission announced. The results for the assembly elections will be declared on October 4. A total of 20,629 polling stations will be set up for over 2 crore voters, said Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar. There are 90 seats in the Haryana Assembly.
