PALAMPUR: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) unit at Agriculture University, Palampur, has submitted a memorandum to the Registrar demanding a reduction in the recently increased student fee.
The action follows a series of protests and appeals made by the ABVP and the student body against the substantial fee hike imposed by the university administration.
The administration has raised various fee components by approximately 2 to 5 times, a move that has placed a significant financial burden on students.
ABVP’s Agricultural University unit president Abhay Verma criticised the hike, noting that students were already struggling with high fees at the state’s sole agricultural university. He described the fee increase as a betrayal of the student community, particularly affecting those from poor and middle-class backgrounds.
Verma pointed out that despite submitting a memorandum to the Vice-Chancellor two days ago and conducting a symbolic protest the day before, there has been no positive response or action from the Vice-Chancellor to rescind the fee hike.
The university has introduced new charges for green campus maintenance and garbage collection, even though the campus lacks sufficient dustbins.
The ABVP memorandum stresses the need for the administration to reconsider the fee hike decision in light of the financial hardships faced by many students.
It calls for a balanced approach that considers the welfare of students from all societal sections, particularly those from economically weaker families.
He said the ABVP and the student body were determined to continue their efforts until a resolution that supports the interests of all students is achieved.
