Shimla:
The Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education is taking strong measures to address declining academic performance in state schools. Teachers of subjects where less than 50% of students passed in Classes 10 and 12 board examinations will soon face administrative action, including potential transfers and salary-related consequences.

According to the Directorate of School Education, data is currently being compiled to identify such underperforming teachers. A formal proposal is expected to be sent to Education Minister Rohit Thakur for approval next week.

Teachers falling below the benchmark will first be issued a show-cause notice, seeking justification for the poor results. If their responses are deemed unsatisfactory, their annual salary increments will be withheld. Subsequently, they will be transferred to different schools.

In addition, the annual confidential reports (ACRs) of principals at underperforming institutions will carry a “red entry”, marking a negative performance review.
Notices have already been issued to principals and headmasters of 52 schools that recorded pass rates of less than 25%. Among them are five principals of senior secondary schools responsible for poor Class 12 results and 47 principals and headmasters (23 from senior secondary and 24 from high schools) related to Class 10 outcomes.

Director of School Education Ashish Kohli confirmed that the board examination results have been received and are being analysed subject-wise. “We have requested performance reports from all district deputy directors. Action will be taken against teachers in schools where subject-wise results fall below 50%. Their increments will be halted for this year, and transfers will follow,” Kohli stated.

This crackdown reflects the department’s renewed emphasis on accountability and performance-based evaluation in public education across the state.
