Compulsory BEd among new recruitment rules set for Sanskrit teachers in Himachal

Shimla: The Himachal Pradesh government has introduced new recruitment and promotion rules for Sanskrit teachers in the state.

As per the revised guidelines issued by the Directorate of Elementary Education, candidates aspiring to become Trained Graduate Teachers (TGT) in Sanskrit must now possess a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree.

Additionally, candidates who have completed their Bachelor’s (BA) and Master’s (MA) degrees in Sanskrit will also be eligible for the post of Shastri teachers.

Contract-based appointments

Candidates who do not have 50% marks in their Shastri degree can secure employment based on their MA marks. However, this condition will apply only to those who enrolled in a BEd programme after 2011.
Those who completed their BEd before 2011 will be exempted from the minimum marks’ requirement.

Initially, these appointments will be made on a contractual basis, with selected teachers receiving a salary of Rs 21,360 per month.

Recruitment for TGT Sanskrit positions will be conducted either through the Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission (HPPSC) or the Himachal Pradesh Staff Selection Commission (HPSSC). For batch-wise recruitments, a merit list will be prepared based on the seniority of degree completion.

Sanskrit cadre and eligibility criteria

The total sanctioned cadre for TGT Sanskrit teachers in government schools across Himachal Pradesh is 4,321. Candidates between 18 and 45 years of age are eligible to apply.

The essential qualifications include:
• A Shastri degree or a Bachelor’s degree in Sanskrit with at least one compulsory Sanskrit subject
• A two-year Diploma in Elementary Education (DElEd) from a recognised institution
• A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Sanskrit with at least 50% marks, along with a BEd degree
• Candidates who have completed senior secondary with 50% marks and hold a four-year Bachelor of Elementary Education (B.El.Ed.) with Sanskrit as a compulsory subject will also be considered eligible.

Other eligible candidates

Candidates with a four-year integrated Bachelor’s degree in Arts or Science with Sanskrit as a compulsory subject from an NCTE-recognised institution will also be eligible.

Additionally, candidates who have cleared the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) conducted by the Himachal Pradesh Board of School Education will be considered for recruitment. However, the minimum percentage requirement in graduation will not apply to those who enrolled in BEd or Bachelor of Elementary Education (BElEd) before July 29, 2011.
