Two bulls in Jumhar Dhar, near Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, saved their owner’s life by fending off a ferocious bear attack late Friday night.
The incident has left the local community in awe, with many describing it as an extraordinary act of courage from animals traditionally not known for such protective instincts.
The dramatic encounter unfolded around 11.30 pm when a bear entered the home of 75-year-old sheep herder Noor Jamal. The bear, notorious for attacks in the region, pounced on the elderly man as he slept in a traditional kotha house, made of stone, mud and wood, alongside his 14-year-old grandson, Hasam.
The animal inflicted severe injuries on Noor Jamal’s face and back, dragging him out of the house in what seemed like a life-threatening situation.
Just when hope seemed to be slipping away, Jamal’s two bulls, tied outside the house, sensed the danger. In a feat of extraordinary strength and loyalty, the bulls uprooted the pegs to which they were tied and charged at the bear.
Using their horns, they knocked the bear down, delivering strong blows that forced the wild animal to retreat. The bulls then chased the bear for nearly 50 metres, ensuring it was far from their injured master.
Hasam, who witnessed the entire incident, recounted the terrifying moments, “The bear attacked Dada (grandfather) and dragged him out of the house.

The bulls came to the rescue just in time. They knocked the bear down and drove it away. If it weren’t for them, the bear could have done much worse.”
By the time other family members arrived at the scene early Saturday morning, the bulls had already driven the bear off. Noor Jamal was immediately rushed to Chamba Medical College, where he is currently undergoing treatment for his injuries. His condition, though serious, is stable and doctors are hopeful for his recovery.
