Himachal govt to launch goat milk ghee on Diwali, priced much higher than cow variant

Shimla: In a pioneering move, the Himachal Pradesh government is set to market goat milk ghee, priced at Rs 1,800 per kg, significantly higher than its cow milk counterpart that is available around Rs 700 a kg.
Rich in protein and calcium, goat milk ghee will be available at all Milkfed centres across the state starting Diwali. This initiative is part of a pilot project aimed at promoting high-quality dairy products in the region.
The state-run Milkfed has commenced the production of goat milk ghee at its Jhaleda Milk Plant in Una district. Currently, villagers in the surrounding areas are selling goat milk to Milkfed at Rs 70 per kg. However, supply constraints have emerged, with only 30 to 40 kg of milk being collected daily from the rural areas of Una, far below the project’s initial requirements.

So far, 200 kg of goat milk ghee has been produced, and it is being packaged and distributed to sales centres. A 200-gram box is priced at Rs 360 and has been made available at all Milkfed outlets. Although the product has yet to see sales, officials are optimistic about its prospects.
A Milkfed official said that based on consumer response, production would be scaled up, and goat milk ghee will be manufactured statewide under the project’s next phase.
Known for its health benefits, goat milk ghee is rich in essential nutrients such as vitamin E, vitamin D, vitamin B12, and omega-3 fatty acids. It also contains vital minerals like zinc, copper, potassium, and magnesium, which contribute to its ability to protect against several serious diseases.
With the initiative expected to garner attention for its premium nutritional value, the state government is hopeful that this Diwali offering will pave the way for larger-scale production of goat-based dairy products across Himachal Pradesh.
