Renovated at Rs 6 crore, Mandi’s 160-year-old Bijai school building gathering dust

MANDI: The 160-year-old Bijai High School building, centrally located in Mandi, has undergone restoration at a cost of approximately Rs 6 crore, funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). Despite the significant investment and the building’s historical importance, its potential remains largely untapped even four years after restoration.
Heritage restoration completed in 2020
The restoration project, initiated by the Old Students Association (OSA) and funded by National Cultural Fund’s Mandi chapter, began in January 2016. The work was carried out by RSB SCL JV contractor Sanjay Dhawan, renowned for his expertise in heritage construction. The building, known as O Block and Lakkad House, was completed in September 2020, retaining its original wooden and stone construction style.
Calls for utilisation of heritage site
Despite the completion of the restoration work, the building has not yet been put to effective use. The OSA has consistently urged the government and relevant departments to establish activities similar to those at Shimla’s Gaiety Theatre. However, the building remains underutilised, becoming a “white elephant” in the process.
The building’s maintenance has deteriorated due to its lack of use. The wooden surfaces, which were once polished, are now fading and showing signs of wear. The neglect has raised concerns about the preservation of the building’s heritage.

Deputy CM receives memorandum
On the occasion of Janmashtami, a delegation from the OSA, led by its president Anil Sharma, presented a memorandum to Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, who also oversees the Language and Culture Department. They requested that the building be utilised for artistic, literary educational and heritage purposes, including the establishment of a museum.
Need for a museum in Mandi
Currently, Mandi lacks a government museum, while neighbouring regions like Chamba, Kangra and Shimla have their own museums. The OSA argues that establishing a museum in the building would enhance Mandi’s reputation as the cultural hub of the region.
Inspection and future prospects
The Deputy Chief Minister agreed to personally inspect the building. Following his suggestion, APMC Chairman Sanjeev Guleria along with OSA members conducted a detailed inspection. They have pledged to raise the matter with the Chief Minister and advocate for the establishment of a museum and other activities at the site.
