Manali/Mandi: The Manali region in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh has witnessed quite a contrasting weather event this monsoon season, experiencing a 38 per cent deficit in rainfall and now being hit by a cloudburst.
The severe cloudburst occurred last night in Solang Nullah area near Manali, triggering a flashflood in Anjani Mahadev stream. The incident has led to the closure of the Leh-Manali highway as large boulders have obstructed the road.
No casualties have been reported, but the flashflood has caused major damage to a nearby power project and several houses. Emergency response teams have been deployed to assess and manage the situation.
The Lahaul-Spiti police have confirmed the cloudburst and subsequent flashflood, which swept away part of the Leh-Manali highway. The authorities have redirected traffic to Lahaul-Spiti via Rohtang Pass and advised both tourists and residents to exercise caution.
Dramatic images from the scene this morning reveal the extent of the damage, with large stones littering the bridge and surrounding areas. The water level in the Anjani Mahadev stream has since receded, but the aftermath highlights the flood’s intensity. In the Vahang area, military personnel alerted the community using sirens and vehicles parked along the roads were promptly relocated for safety.
