Mandi sees 330 forest fires this season, 128 cases to be investigated by police

MANDI: Mandi district has witnessed an alarming surge in forest fires, with 330 incidents reported this season, resulting in the destruction of 3,112 hectares of forest land.
This marks a significant increase compared to previous years, with estimated damages amounting to Rs 1.09 crore. Notably, 727 hectares of the affected land had been recently replanted with saplings.
Chief Forest Conservator of Mandi Ajit Thakur highlighted the impact of the intense heatwave on both the local population and the forests. “This year, Mandi district has experienced a higher number of forest fire incidents compared to previous years,” Thakur stated.
Thakur attributed the majority of these fires to mischievous activities. “Of the 330 cases, 128 are under suspicion and have been handed over to the police for further investigation.
Both the Forest Department and the police are actively investigating these incidents,” he said.
Efforts to combat the fires have been relentless, with Forest Department personnel working around the clock, supported by local administration, police, fire brigades, and community members. Thakur expressed his gratitude for their cooperation.
The Chief Forest Conservator explained that the last two years of favorable weather had resulted in a decrease in forest fires. However, during this period, a significant accumulation of pine needles and other flammable materials occurred.
“Typically, we see such accumulations over several years. When extreme heat follows, the number of fire incidents tends to rise, as observed this season,” Thakur added.
Thakur emphasised that controlling forest fires is a collective effort and appreciated the community’s support. “Our personnel are dedicated to mitigating these fires, and the cooperation from various departments and local residents has been invaluable,” he noted.
