Thirty six persons have been killed in an accident after the bus they were travelling in fell into a 200-metre-deep gorge in Uttarakhand’s Almora district on Monday (November 4, 2024) morning.
According to information, the 45-seater bus fell into the gorge at Marchula while on its way from Pauri in Garhwal to Ramnagar in Kumaon.
A rescue operation was soon launched at the accident site by personnel from the police and the State Disaster Response Force.
“Received very sad news of casualties of passengers in the unfortunate bus accident that took place in Marchula of Almora district.
The district administration has been instructed to conduct relief and rescue operations swiftly,” said Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on X.
The Chief Minister said the local administration and SDRF teams were on the spot to evacuate the injured and take them to the nearest health centre for treatment.
“Instructions have also been given to airlift the seriously injured passengers if required,” he said.
Dhami also announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each for the families of those killed in the accident and Rs 1 lakh for those injured. A magisterial inquiry has also been ordered.
