Tragedy struck in Pooh block of Kinnaur district in Himachal Pradesh on Thursday (September 5, 2024) morning when a pickup vehicle carrying gravel and MGNREGA women workers veered off the Gandhi Mohalla Stadium road, falling nearly 50 feet into a gorge.
The accident, which occurred around 8 am, resulted in the death of three women and left four others, including the driver, injured.
According to reports, the pickup was en route from Zero Point to the Gandhi Mohalla Stadium when it lost control on the second turn of the road. One woman died at the scene while two others succumbed to their injuries at the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Pooh. The remaining injured, including the driver, were initially treated at the CHC-Pooh and then referred to the Regional Hospital in Reckong Peo.
Given the severity of their injuries, the injured were airlifted from Karcham to IGMC-Shimla for advanced medical care.
The deceased have been identified as Sarita Negi (38), Chhawang Jagmo (40) and Indramani (35). The injured are Nepali-origin driver Deepak (40), Shanti Devi (35), Surendra Negi (32) and Sanam Chokid (40).
Pooh ADM Vinay Modi visited the site and announced immediate relief of Rs 25,000 to each of the deceased’s families and Rs 5,000 to the injured.
