An earthquake measuring 3.5 on the Richter scale shook tribal Lahaul-Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh on Monday (April 1, 2024) night.
The National Centre for Seismology said the earthquake’s depth was measured at 5 km from the surface. The latitude and longitude of the earthquake were measured at 32.73 and 76.61 respectively.
Panic gripped the residents of Lahaul-Spiti, several parts of which received snow over the past few days. The tremor triggered an atmosphere of fear among the locals, especially those living on upper floors in houses, who rushed out into the open in panic. There have been no reports of casualties or property damage.
Several parts of Himachal, including Chamba and Kangra districts, fall in zone 5 from earthquake perspective, which is considered highly susceptible to seismic events.
A devastating earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale had struck Kangra district on April 4, 1905, killing more than 20,000 people. Kangra region as well as Himachal Pradesh were then part of undivided Punjab province. Nearly 1 lakh buildings were destroyed and 53,000 domestic animals were killed. The historical Kangra fort and the famous Brajeshwari Temple were also destroyed. It was one of the deadliest earthquakes in the Indian history.
