CHAMBA: Panic gripped the residents of Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh on Saturday (January 13, 2024) after an earthquake measuring 3.1 on the Richter scale shook the region.
According to information, the mild tremor was felt at 1.16 pm and it occurred at a depth of 9 km in Chamba near the border that Himachal Pradesh shares with Jammu and Kashmir.
The tremor triggered an atmosphere of fear among the locals, especially those living on upper floors in houses, who rushed out into the open in panic. There have been no reports of casualties or property damage.
Chamba district, falling in zone 5 from an earthquake perspective, is considered highly susceptible to seismic events. The area experiences daily occurrences of minor tremors, adding to the heightened sensitivity of the region.
A devastating earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale had struck neighbouring Kangra district on April 4, 1905, killing more than 20,000 people. Kangra region as well as Himachal Pradesh were then part of undivided Punjab province. Nearly 1,00,000 buildings were destroyed and 53,000 domestic animals were killed. The historical Kangra fort and the famous Brajeshwari Temple were also destroyed. It was one of the deadliest earthquakes in the Indian history.
