2-day rain causes Rs 10.8 crore damage, one death in Mandi district; Sundernagar wettest in Himachal

MANDI: Heavy rainfall over the past two days has resulted in substantial damage across Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, with losses amounting to an estimated Rs 10.8 crore. One woman too was killed in a rain-related incident while Sundernagar recorded the highest rainfall in the state at 100 mm.

Mandi ADC Rohit Rathore said the relentless rain had inflicted significant damage to both government and private properties. The deceased woman has been identified as Vanki Devi from Shala village in Gohar subdivision.

Heavy rains led to the closure of 162 roads throughout the district. So far, 103 of these roads have been cleared for traffic, while efforts continue to open the remaining 59 roads, said Rathore. The downpour also impacted 147 transformers, of which 143 have been restored.

The work is ongoing to repair the remaining four transformers. Additionally, the Water Power Department reported a loss of Rs 36 lakh, affecting several drinking water schemes.

Rathore confirmed that the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway was fully operational. Teams from the administration and related departments are actively engaged in relief efforts at various locations across the district.

Balhghati residents alarmed by Suketi Khud’s overflow
The continuous rainfall has caused the Suketi Khud to overflow, raising alarm among residents of Balhghati. The rising water level near Chakker led to the collapse of shuttering on an under-construction bridge for the four-lane highway. Landslides near Pulgharat caused intermittent traffic disruptions on the highway.

Several drivers attempting to take the Bhadyal route faced traffic jams due to the increased number of vehicles. Soil erosion near Char Mil created hazardous conditions for drivers, with slippery surfaces complicating vehicle crossing. The CHC-Katoala building also sustained damage from flooding and the water level in a nearby stream surged significantly, causing further destruction.
