SHIMLA: Two persons were killed when the house they were living in was hit by a landslide at Ashwani Khad, along the Junga-Shimla road, about 20 km from Himachal Pradesh capital Shimla.
According to information, the incident took place on Tuesday (February 6, 2024) morning around 1 am, claiming the lives of the two labourers from Bihar who were inside their hut at the time of the disaster. The victims, identified as Rakesh (34) and Rajesh (36), were employed as masons in Shimla.
The local administration started rescue efforts immediately after receiving information about the landslide and the bodies of the deceased were recovered from the debris. The bodies were subsequently shifted to the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) and Hospital in Shimla for postmortem examination.
The Shimla police have notified the families and acquaintances of the deceased. Following the completion of postmortem procedures, the bodies will be released to the relatives for last rites.
In response to the tragic event, the entire administrative machinery, including Shimla Deputy Commissioner Anupam Kashyap, promptly reached the site of the landslide. The incident is attributed to the incessant rain and snowfall witnessed across the state, including Shimla, over the past week, resulting in the landslide.
“The landslide occurred near a crusher site on Mehli-Junga road. While workers’ huts collapsed and two persons died after being buried under debris, five other escaped. As soon as information about the incident was received, teams of police, fire brigade, SDRF and home guard reached the spot for rescue work.
The police and SDRF team, with the help of fire brigade and home guard personnel, recovered the bodies of the deceased from the debris in about an hour,” the Deputy Commissioner said in a statement. The district administration has provided interim relief to the injured.
The Deputy Commissioner also talked to the workers who emerged safely from the incident and consoled them after their colleagues died in the accident.
