CM highlights role of martyrs from the state

Chief Minister Jairam Thakur on Sunday accepted the ‘Vijay Mashal’, marking 50 years of India’s victory over Pakistan, at a public function at Seri Manch in Mandi district.

The CM said that the golden jubilee of India’s victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war was launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi by lighting the ‘Vijay Mashal’ that is being carried all over the country.
Role of Himachalis
He said that 1700 martyrs from Himachal have made the state and their country proud. State’s martyrs have been awarded four Param Vir Chakra, two Ashok Chakra, 11 Mahavir Chakra and 23 Kirti Chakra. Medals have been awarded to 1111 soldiers from the state.
Martyrs kin honoured
The kin of the martyrs from the state were honoured on the occasion. A cycling expedition was flagged off. Earlier the CM and 16th Rising Star Corps, Yol, general officer commanding, Lt General PN Ananthanarayanan visited the martyrs memorial and laid wreaths there. The statue of Mahatma Gandhi was garlanded on the occasion. Gen Anantha highlighted how the 1971 war was a landmark victory for India over Pakistan for all times to come.
261 from state martyred in 1971 war
The CM highlighted that 261 soldiers from the state were martyred in the 1971 war with Pakistan. In the Kargil war, 52 soldiers were martyred.
